Arranged in much the same reader-friendly format, the 2001 edition will include: * More than 2,000 new entries in the plant encyclopedia (which exceeds 8,000
entries in all) * All-new, full-color plant illustrations and photo gallery * Expanded and more detailed climate zone maps for all the Western states (adding
Alaska, Hawaii and western Canada), using newly-available geographical and
weather data * Quick-reference, easy-care instructions for major plant groups * Expanded plant selection guide
Sunset garden editor Kathleen Brenzel says, "New tools, materials, and techniques are constantly broadening our choices and reshaping the way we garden in the West. In response to this natural evolution, the editors of Sunset have updated and revised the seventh edition of the Sunset Western Garden Book to reflect how our readers will be gardening in the new century."
Setting the tone for the book is a photographic essay in which Sunset emphasizes the movement towards "natural gardening," a trend that can be traced back to the 1940s. Natural gardens minimize the need for chemical pest control and emphasize the use of native plants in a setting that blends with the natural surroundings. Low maintenance and respect for natural resources are a strong component of this philosophy.
